An International Competition and Convention is being held to celebrate the 10th
Anniversary of the British and International Bass Forum. The course will take place in
Sherborne, Dorset for one week in August 21st-28th, and there will be oppertunities for
Bassists of all varieties. The course will include:
Recitals, Classical, Contemporary, Jazz, Improvisation, Lessons, Workshops, Lectures,
Masterclasses, Technique Sessions, Trade Stands, Orchestral Repertoire, Solo Repertoire,
Ensembles, Massed Bass Orchestra, Luthiers/Repairers, Music Shop, New Commissions,
All-Stars Concert, and Frantisek Posta 85th Birthday Memorial Concert.
Competiton Prizes Include:
1st prize - £1250 plus Concerto with Orchestra
2nd Prize - £700
3rd Prize - £300

Switzerland
Schola Cantorum, part of the Music Academy in Basel, offers two-day workshops twice a
term for anyone interested in studying the historical performance practice of the double
bass and violone.
The topics presented include: setting up an early bass, playing on gut strings, early bows
for the bass, five- and six-string basses (including the 'Viennese Bass') and phrasing and
musicianship taught in open lessons.
